smartphone made by Pablo Escobar’s brother is a rebranded Samsung Galaxy Fold in gold tinfoil

A foldable phone made headlines last year that pulled inspiration from the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar and the company behind the device is back with a next-generation model – the Escobar Fold 2.

Designed by Roberto Escobar, Pablo’s brother, the smartphone claims to be a ‘real Samsung killer’ at a fraction of the cost, as it sells for $350 while Samsung’s is around $1,500.

However, a tear down of the casing reveals that it is not going to replace the South Korean smartphone because Escobar’s handset is a Galaxy Fold, just wrapped in a gold sticker.

YouTuber Marques Brownlee compared the Escobar Fold 2 with the Galaxy Fold and found not only do both smartphones have the same design, but he was able to scratch the decal off the hinge to reveal Samsung’s logo.

Escobar is the brother of the deceased drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who led the Medellin Cartel in Columbia and died by gunshot during a police standoff in 1993.

Although Roberto Escobar was the former accountant and co-founder of the Medellin Cartel, it had seemed he had turned over a new leaf with a more legit business – but it seems that he hasn’t strayed too far from his roots.

Last December, he unveiled the $349 Pablo Escobar Fold 1 that boasts two 7.8-inch screens, folds into a tablet and is said to be ‘unbreakable’.

Escobar ‘cut the networks and retailers’ in order to sell the smartphone at a low price with a goal to entice iOS users and ‘beat Apple’ -which he said is scamming customers.

And earlier this month, Escobar Inc., announced it had developed a second generation Escobar Fold.

‘My goal is to become the overstock kingpin of electronical devices this year Roberto De Jesus Escobar Gaviria, Pablo Escobar’s brother and Founder of Escobar Inc.

‘All these factories simply have too much technology laying around, nobody is buying anything in China from secondary factories.’

‘We cut the prices and give clients direct discounts under the Escobar brand umbrella.’

Brownlee, who was able to get his hands on the new Escobar Fold 2, thought there was something odd about the device.

‘From using the phone just for a little bit, it’s pretty clear this appears to be a legit Samsung Galaxy Fold,’ he said in the video.

'It's not just the lower quality packaging, it's not just the lower quality marketing,' Brownlee says. 'My theory is that they are going through orders, finding the names of YouTubers or people in tech media or people they think will talk about the phone if they get it and shipping those and just not shipping the rest

‘This Escobar Fold is the same phone with a gold sticker glued to it.’

No, it’s actually a galaxy fold with gold tinfoil adhesive to it.’

Brownlee pulled out a box cutter and began to scrape along the hinge of the Escobar Fold and underneath the sticker was the Samsung logo.

He continued to explain his theory of how Escobar is able to sell the Samsung smartphone for a fraction of the cost.

He said he ‘cut the networks and retailers’, with the goal of enticing iOS users and ‘beat Apple’ -which he said is scamming customers.

‘I have told many people that I would beat Apple and I will. I cut the networks and retailers, to sell to customers phones that can fold for only $349, phones which in stores cost thousands of dollars by Samsung and others. This is my goal, to beat Apple, and by doing it myself like I always have.’

He also has plans to file a $30 billion class-action lawsuit against the Cupertino company on January 6, 2020 for being ‘scammers’ and ‘cheating the people and selling worthless phones’, Escobar told DigitalTrends.

Who was Pablo Escobar, leader of the Medellin Cartel?

Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug trafficker.

During his time at the helm of the Medellin Cartel he controlled over 80 per cent of the cocaine shipped to the US.

This earned him the rank of one of Forbes Magazine’s ten wealthiest people in the world.

Escobar entered the cocaine trade in the early 1970s, collaborating with other criminals to form the Medellin Cartel.

Despite his role as a drug lord Escobar earned popularity by sponsoring charity projects and soccer clubs.

However terror campaigns run by Escobar resulted in the murder of thousands turned the public against him.

By the mid-1980s, Pablo Escobar had an estimated net worth of $30 billion and cash was so prevalent that Escobar purchased a Learjet for the sole purpose of flying his money.

More than 15 tons of cocaine were reportedly smuggled each day, netting the Cartel as much as $420 million a week.

Colombian law enforcement finally caught up to Pablo Escobar on December 2, 1993 in a middle-class neighborhood in Medellin.

A firefight ensued and, as Escobar tried to escape across a series of rooftops, he and his bodyguard were shot and killed.
