A mother has shared a little-known trick to avoid getting freezer-burned ice cream.

The Australian woman said she stores the tubs upside down in the freezer as this prevents the ice crystals from forming on the surface.

Freezer burn occurs when the moisture in the ice cream evaporates and then it refreezes on the surface, creating the crystals on top.

By inverting the dessert once you get your scoops, the partially melted ice cream will drip onto the lid where it has a less chance of ruining the still-cold portion.

‘I turn my ice cream upside down to avoid freezer burn,’ the woman wrote in a Facebook group.

She said another trick she uses to prevent freezer burn is by storing it in ziplock bags as this will allow the ice cream to ‘stay soft’.

Many were amazed by the woman’s simple trick, saying they will try it out themselves while others said they have been doing this for years.

‘Brilliant. This will help. Empty nesters here and we might go through a tub every few months so this is a fantastic tip for us,’ one woman said, while another added: ‘Good idea’.

While others admitted they had nothing to worry about because their ice creams never last longer enough to get a freezer burn.

‘In what household does ice cream last long enough for this to be an issue?’ one mother joked, while another said: ‘My ice cream never lasts long.’

Another trick to keep ice cream colder is to store it at the back of the freezer as this makes it harder for warm air to invade it every time you open the door.

If you want your ice cream to soften up before serving, simply leave it on the bench for a few minutes.
