The unexpected announcement comes just weeks after Robbie launched a surprise festive track, Can’t Stop Christmas.

The singer has released the cheeky song which pokes fun at the past 12 months, with references to Zooms, hand sanitisers and social distancing.

One of the lines in Robbie’s new Christmas song reads: ‘Santa’s on his sleigh, but now he’s two metres away’, as he jokes about the social distancing rule.

Can’t Stop Christmas’ is a fun take on the traditional Christmas song with playful lyrics reflecting on an unprecedented 2020 complete with an upbeat melody and seasonal jingle bells.

Robbie’s latest track begins: ‘Oh what a miserable year, but what a time to be alive // Sadly some friends disappeared // It’s never been like this before // It feels like we’re at war.’

Continuing: ‘So I wonder who’s gonna decide, if we can do the Auld Lang Syne // I wish that I could do what I like // With this family of mine //We’re going out of our minds.’

Another poignant line of the song reads: ‘The people gonna need something to believe in // After a year of being in.’

Want you back for good! Starting out as a five piece in 1990, Robbie left the band in 1995 (Pictured performing together on X Factor for a one-off special in 2018)

When asked what Robbie would like for Christmas this year, he jokes that ‘socks and sanitizer will do fine’, as all shopping has gone online because the high street is closed.

Adamant Robbie continues: ‘You can’t take away our season //  Like you can’t take away the wine // Santa’s on his sleigh, but now he’s 2 metres away.’

Sensing the mood of the nation, he adds: ‘Why oh why are we all waiting // The whole damn world anticipating // Beyond boredom past frustration //The planet’s locked in what ifs and maybes.’
