I’m a Celebrity’s Jack Vidgen breaks down in tears as he reveals his strained relationship with his mother – and admits he had to ‘parent himself’ after winning Australia’s Got Talent

Jack Vidgen spoke candidly about his complex relationship with his mother, Rachel Hayton, on Wednesday’s episode of I’m a Celebrity.

The singer, 23, broke down in tears as he started talking to his co-star Jess Eva about how much he missed his mum in the jungle.

In an emotional confession, Jack also revealed how the ‘power dynamic’ between him and Rachel changed when he won Australia’s Got Talent at the age of 14, and left him feeling like his family’s ‘breadwinner’.

Jack said he ‘resented’ the responsibility that fell on his shoulders, but now regrets how he treated his mother as a teenager.

‘I miss my mum,’ Jack said, before describing the single mother as a ‘caring and loving’ person.

‘She’s always worked three or four jobs just to keep a roof over our head,’ he added.

‘Our relationship has been hard over the years. When I won [Australia’s Got Talent], our dynamic completely switched and I was the breadwinner.’

Jack went on to say that at the time, he felt like he was ‘parenting himself.’

‘There was nothing she could do but I almost felt like I was almost parenting myself. I have so much resentment now that I can’t control. I think in here I’m just reflecting on how I wish I’d treated her better,’ he said.

Jess sweetly comforted Jack and said that his mother would instantly forgive him.

‘Through a mum’s eyes, mum’s don’t think that, that’s what kids do, they say mean stuff to parents,’ Jess said.

She made Jack smile when she added: ‘There would not be a mum on this planet that wouldn’t be proud of your mate… My god you’re gorgeous, I’d have you as a child. You’d have the best teeth in the family!’

In January last year, as he prepared to make his music comeback with the release of his single, he told Daily Mail Australia that appearing on the AGT felt ‘like a lifetime ago.’

Jack – who took part in The Voice in 2019 – admitted that he had to step away from the spotlight to ‘grow up’ before returning to the public eye.

‘It’s pretty insane looking back that it happened. It was an incredible experience and I’m so grateful for it.’

He said he also felt like his break away from the industry was worthwhile.

‘It was also so nice to have that break as well to chill out, grow up and be a kid for a little while and to come back over the last year,’ he explained.

‘I’ve been able to comeback into it after forming my own beliefs and onions and all that kind of thing and becoming an adult and stepping back into the public eye and to having a career in the music industry.’
