Customers queue down the block to support Texas bakery hit by backlash over Pride cookies

Sweet revenge: Customers queue down the block to support Texas bakery hit by social media backlash for posting a picture of rainbow cookies

  • Confections in Lufkin said it lost followers and orders over the Pride cookies
  • An outpouring of support followed, with the bakery selling out two days in a row
  • Owners Dawn Cooley and Miranda Dolder said they were ‘humbled’ by support

Customers have been queuing around the block to support a Texas bakery that said it had lost business after posting a picture of rainbow cookies for Pride.

Confections, in Lufkin, shared an image of the heart-shaped cookies with rainbow frosting on Facebook on Wednesday along with the message ‘More LOVE. Less hate. Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ friends! All lovers of cookies and happiness are welcome here.’

The following day, the bakery revealed in another post that it had ‘lost a significant amount of followers’ because of the cookies made to celebrate Pride month, which runs through June.

‘We received a very hateful message on our business page canceling a large order (5dz) of summer themed cookies for tomorrow morning (that we just finished decorating) because of a rainbow heart cookie we posted,’ the post read.

‘My heart is heavy. Honestly I never thought a post that literally said more love less hate would result in this kind of backlash to a very small business that is struggling to stay afloat and spread a little cheer through baked goods.’

The message went on to advise followers: ‘If you love our cookies we will have an over abundance of them tomorrow.’

Customers have since flocked to the bakery to show their support for the owners, resulting in queues around the block and two sell-out days in a row over the weekend.

On Friday, co-owner Dawn Cooley shared a photo of the snaking line and thanked customers, saying ‘We are overwhelmed.’

‘All this attention on our small business is very humbling. Makes me nervous! Those who know me (Dawn) know how shy I am. In the 11 years we’ve been open we’ve never seen anything quite like this’.

Sister and co-owner Miranda Dolder and baker Felicia were also ‘humbled and grateful and moved by this outpouring of love,’ Cooley said.

Customers were so determined to support the store that some even gave the owners money to donate when there were no more cookies left to buy.

Cooley said all the money would be given to local animal rescues.

‘It’s great to see there are still compassionate humans in the world! Wishing the very best for your small business. Happy Pride,’ one Facebook user wrote.

‘I didn’t know about you until this. I am so grateful for you and the love you have for people. Next time I am in Lufkin, I’m stopping by,’ another posted.
