However, the 63-year-old has informed the club he wants a longer period away from football as he seeks to recharge his batteries after leaving Borussia Dortmund.

Favre left his job at the Westfalenstadion in December – and appeared ready to step back into football but has now had a last minute change of heart.

Favre does not intend to take another job and will continue his hiatus away from football for the foreseeable future.

The Swiss coach is not considering any other job option, his decision not to take the Palace job purely a personal opinion.

While the news comes as a blow to Palace, the relationship between the club and Favre remains entirely amicable.

Palace chiefs have spent the day in talks with Favre in hope of provoking a change of heart, but respected coach is determined to extended his time away from the game.

The club’s next head coach has a major rebuilding job on his hands – but Favre has decided he is not the man for the job.
