Tokyo Olympics: Sweden stun the United States in women’s football

Sweden stun the United States as 2016 silver medal winners THRASH the top-ranked side 3-0 in Group G Tokyo Olympics opener… ending the USA’s 44-match unbeaten run

The United States women’s football side suffered a shock 3-0 defeat by Sweden in their opening game at the Tokyo Olympics.

Stina Blackstenius scored a brace for the Swedes while Lina Hurtig added a third 17 minutes from time to seal an impressive win in Group G.  

Sweden famously knocked out the Americans in the quarter-finals of the Brazil Games five years ago and went on to claim the silver medal.

The USA, the top ranked side, were unbeaten in 44 consecutive matches and are still bidding to become the first World Cup holders to win Olympic gold.
