Tottenham ‘offer Atalanta £34m plus £8m in add-ons for Cristian Romero’… and the Premier League side have ‘agreed a five-year contract with the Argentina defender’

Tottenham have reportedly bid £34million plus £8m in add-ons for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

The Serie A club signed the centre back on a two-year loan from Juventus in September 2020 but hold a £13m option to buy at the end of the season

Spurs, who have already agreed a deal to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on loan, are now looking to strenghthen their defence. Argentina publication TyC Sports claim they have offered the Italian club £34m with a further £8m in bonuses.

Atalanta are said to value the 23-year-old at £47m and are not under pressure to sell, given he will become their player at the end of next season.

Sky Sport Italia claim that Spurs have agreed personal terms with Romero, who would sign a five-year deal if the two clubs can negoatiate a fee.

Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also tweeted that a £47m fee would be discussed. 

Romero played a key role in helping Atalanta qualify for the Champions League once again.

The centre back scored three goals and made five assists in 42 appearances last term and his impressive performances saw him crowned Serie A’s ‘Defender of the Season’.

He was also part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America earlier this month, with Lionel Scaloni’s side keeping a clean sheet in each of the three games he played. 

Signing a defender is a priority for Spurs and new boss Nuno Espirito Santo this summer.

The club had a £13m bid turned down for Bologna centre back Takehiro Tomiyasu earlier this month.
