Tokyo Olympics: Anna Kisenhofer pulls off a shock to win gold in women’s road race

Austria’s Anna Kisenhofer pulls off a HUGE shock at the women’s road race as she storms to gold after dominant display in Tokyo… but Team GB’s Lizzie Deignan has to settle for 11th place

Austria’s Anna Kisenhofer pulled off a major shock as she stormed to claim the gold medal in the women’s road race in Tokyo on Sunday after racing ahead of her rivals by more than a minute.

Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten followed her behind in second place for silver, with Elisa Longo Borghini rounding off the podium places to snatch bronze.

But it was disappointment for Team GB‘s Lizzie Deignan as she had to contend with an 11th place finish.

Van Vleuten thought she had won the gold medal and was left red-faced as she celebrated wildly at the finish line – not realising Kisenhofer had raced ahead of her.

‘I didn’t know,’ van Vleuten said after the race. ‘I was wrong. I didn’t know.’
