Keegan, who managed Newcastle between 1992 and 1997 and also in 2008, recently revealed the highlight of his time in the Magpies hotseat was ‘making people happy’ after saving the club from relegation to the third tier.

‘I don’t think we transformed a football club; we transformed a city,’ he told Radio Alty.

‘That’s just what we did by being open, allowing people to come and watch us train, going into the community.

‘We did so much so that was the big success at Newcastle – not the fact we nearly won the league or should have won the league or were the best team never to win the league as some people say.

‘It was the fact we built up a city and took it way up there and made people happy. That was what we did.’

In January 1996 Keegan’s Newcastle topped the Premier League table by 12 points, ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United.

In the title run-in Keegan’s explosive rant at Sir Alex Ferguson live on Sky Sports was iconic.

The then Manchester United manager had publicly cast doubt over the application of Leeds and Nottingham Forest, Newcastle’s next opponents in the title race.

‘I’ve kept really quiet, but I’ll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that,’ declared Keegan, jabbing his finger at the camera.

‘You can tell him now, if you’re watching it, we’re still fighting for this title, and he’s got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. And I’ll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it!’

Keegan’s Newcastle went on to lose the title to United by four points.
