Abbie Wood suffers Olympic heartbreak as she finishes 11 HUNDREDTHS of a second off bronze medal for Team GB despite lifetime best swim in women’s 200m individual medley

British duo Abbie Wood and Alicia Wilson finished outside the podium positions in the final of the women’s 200 metres individual medley on Wednesday morning.

Wood was viewed as a contender to continue Team GB‘s medal rush in the pool at Tokyo 2020 after qualifying second fastest in the semi-finals, but a personal best time of two minutes and 9.15 seconds saw her finish fourth.

She was just an agonising 0.11secs adrift of bronze medallist Kate Douglass, whose American compatriot Alex Walsh collected silver as Japan‘s Yui Ohashi took the gold in 2mins 8.52s.

Wilson came home in 2:12.86 to place eighth behind Hungarian great Katinka Hosszu.

Wood, 22, landed her first major individual medal with a 200 individual medley silver at May’s European Championships, finishing just four hundredths of a second off gold.

Meanwhile, America’s Katie Ledecky claimed a big victory in the 1500m freestyle.

The American favourite took victory in 15:37.34 to secure her sixth Olympic gold medal. Team-mate Erica Sullivan took silver.
