There was agony for Team GB rower Vicky Thornley in the women’s single sculls as she just missed out on a bronze medal by half a second after an exciting finish. 

Hopes were high for Thornley after racing through to the final in Tokyo, but she simply ran out of steam towards the end despite a valiant effort to seal a podium place, with Austria’s Magdalena Lobnig pipping her to bronze by just half a second.

Her time of 07:20:39 was bettered by Lognig, who secured a finish of 07:19:72.

New Zealand‘s Emma Twigg claimed the gold medal after storming ahead and holding a dominant lead throughout – flourishing with a time of 07:13:97.

Speaking to the BBC after her tight finish, Thornley admitted she had given it her absolute all.

‘I don’t think I could have done anything more. I was confident I could come through in the second half but in the last 100 I just fell away.

‘I knew I was racing for bronze, it was about me and the Austrian Magdalena Lobnig, I thought I could reel her back in but fair play to her she’s an awesome athlete.

‘I’ve given it absolutely everything I’ve got.’

Twigg bolted to an early lead, then finished with a surge over the final 500 meters to dominate.

Twigg had finished fourth in the previous two Olympics but easily shrugged off Russia’s Hanna Prakatsen, who won silver at the Sea Forest Waterway.
