British sprinter Zharnel Hughes will compete for an Olympic gold medal after qualifying for the mens’ 100m final by winning Sunday’s semi-final but fellow Team GB hopefuls Reece Prescod and Chijindu Ujah missed out.

European champion Hughes won the semi-final with a time of 9.98 seconds, his fastest time of the season and his first sub-10 time of the year.

Nigeria‘s Enoch Adegoke came second behind Hughes in exactly 10secs, pipping the highly fancied American Trayvon Bromell.

Bromell, who was tipped as one of the favourites to become the first Olympic 100m champion since Usain Bolt, missed out on the final in a shock result.

In the other semi-final, Prescod was disqualified for making a false start and will not make the final, which takes place later on Sunday.

The USA’s Fred Kerley won that race with a time of 9.96 seconds, beating 2016 bronze medallist Andre De Grasse of Canada, who finished runner-up and will be one of the men to watch in the final.
