Morrisons staff dress as Village People and perform YMCA to raise customers’ spirits during crisis

Young man, there’s no need to feel lock-down! Morrisons staff dress as the Village People to perform YMCA to raise customers’ spirits during crisis

  • The rendition of the 1978 karaoke hit was met with applause from customers
  • Staff can be seen dressed in police officer, air hostess, and builder costumes
  • YMCA is the band’s most successful anthem and has achieved global success

This is the heart-warming moment Morrisons staff burst into song and perform a disco-filled rendition of YMCA for customers.

A video posted on Twitter shows customers and colleagues flocking to the front of the store as the karaoke classic is blasted from speakers.

The staff members are dressed in full Village People attire, including as police officers, an air hostess, and one woman even rocks a false moustache while dressed as a builder.

They stand at the end of aisles and perform the perfectly-timed dance routine as those within the store – believed to be the Becontree Heath branch in London – watch on in delight.

The Twitter user who posted the video said that staff were ‘out here making everyone laugh and cry’.

The supermarket responded that: ‘If we can brighten at least one person’s day I’d call it a success’.

The end of the two-minute long performance was greeted with cheers and applause from delighted customers.

The karaoke anthem is considered to be the the Village People’s biggest hit and achieved worldwide success when it stormed the charts in 1978, reaching number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US.

In March of this year the US Library of Congress added YMCA – which has become something of an anthem particularly in the LGBT community – to the National Recording Registry which preserves audio it considers to be ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.

The performance from Morrisons staff is yet another act of generosity from the supermarket in a bid to boost customers’ spirits. It has also implemented a string of measures to help frontline workers tackling the coronavirus pandemic.

The supermarket is offering a 10 per cent discount for all NHS workers until at least July 12, a designated shopping hour for NHS staff at the start of every day, and a click and collect service from various hospital car parks across the country.

The measures were adopted as part of a wider move from supermarkets to cope with coronavirus panic buying.

As Britain faced its rising and unprecedented tide of cases, many supermarkets saw extreme buying from concerned customers who left shelves empty as they stockpiled on groceries, toilet roll and other ‘essential’ items.

The widespread panic buying saw many stores introduce shopping windows designated for the elderly as well as a maximum three-item per product rule in a bid to maintain stock.

Some stores are operating a rule whereby only one customer per family can shop in an attempt to maintain social distancing rules, and many have implemented 6-feet markers to ensure customers remain a safe distance from each other.
