A 14-year-old boy and 34-year-old woman have died following a house fire in south London that also killed a five-year-old boy.

The teenager and woman were taken to hospital following the blaze in at a block of flats in Russett Way, Greenwich, on Saturday with serious injuries.

The Metropolitan Police said the 14-year-old died from his injuries on Wednesday while the woman died in hospital on Thursday.

The fire service said six engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the blaze at the block of maisonettes in Russett Way, Greenwich, at 5.44am on Saturday

All three were members of the same family. Their relatives have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A post-mortem examination on the five-year-old, who died on Saturday, gave his cause of death as inhalation of fire fumes.

Detectives believe the fire was started deliberately but are not looking for anybody else in relation to the investigation.

Firefighters wearing special breathing equipment rescued the family from the top floor of the block of maisonettes early on Saturday March 6, emergency services said.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to the blaze in Russett Way, Greenwich, at 5.44am on Saturday, said the London Fire Brigade.

Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, said: ‘This was a truly awful incident and we are doing everything we can to support the family’s next of kin.

‘We have been working alongside specialist investigators to establish the cause of the fire and it saddens me to say that we believe it was started deliberately, inside the address, by one of those inside.

‘While I accept we may never know the circumstances, I am still very keen to hear from anybody who has information that could shed any light of this tragic incident.’
