A boyfriend has found himself in trouble after he accidentally covered his girlfriend’s brand new couch in car oil during their house move.

The Australian couple’s friend made an urgent plea on social media seeking for help on removing the unsightly stains from the light grey-coloured lounge.

‘Need help. A friend of mine just moved into her first home and her partner accidentally put their new lounge in a pile of car oil,’ she wrote in a Facebook group.

‘Does anyone have ideas on how to get it out completely or as much as possible?’

While there were hundreds of people offering their useful and practical cleaning methods, others saw the amusing side to the dilemma.

‘I’m so sorry to hear the loss of your friend’s partner,’ one woman wrote, another joked: ‘Insurance! Life insurance, hope he has great cover.’

One asked: ‘Can I file for divorce on someone else’s behalf?’ while another suggested: ‘I’d be putting the couch against the wall, as for the partner, I’d be putting him through the wall.’

Others joked the girlfriend should just ‘throw him in the bin’ or seek a professional cleaner as well as a professional marriage counsellor.

Meanwhile, many offered their handy tips on removing the stains.

‘My husband is a car mechanic and he said degreaser will break down the oil and get it out,’ one woman suggested.

Many urged the girlfriend to contact a professional cleaner first before attempting to tackle the grease herself.

One professional cleaner suggested against using products from the supermarket.

‘Please do not try anything from supermarket as you will make it worse,’ she said, adding: ‘You will need to go to a commercial cleaning supplier.

‘They will sell you the bottle of stuff you need to spray on and set first. It’s a fabric-safe degreaser for things like wine, coffee and oils etc. Next, go hire a carpet cleaner or buy a Bissell steam cleaner.’

Many pointed out the stains are on the back of the sofa so they could simply style it against a wall where no one will ever see.

‘Push it against the wall, out of sight out of mind, she’ll never know,’ one wrote.
