Harry Kane has revealed former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a ‘close friend’ but refused to be drawn on the Argentine boss returning to Spurs this year.

Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in late 2019 but the now-Paris Saint-Germain coach has now been linked with a sensational return to north London

Spurs star striker Kane has been linked with an exit away from the club this summer and while he refused to comment on rumours regarding Pochettino, he did admit he wanted PSG to win the Champions League due to his former coach being there.

When asked by ES Magazine whether he knew anything about the rumours linking Pochettino with a return, Kane said: ‘No comment.’

Speaking about the Argentine, the England captain added: ‘We got so close to winning it with Mauricio. I would love to see him win it. We had a great relationship. He is a great person, a great friend.

‘He was the boss, the leader, the one that set the standards in how we played and how we trained. So friendship would never get in the way of what he did on the football side of things.

‘But we became friends in that the things we did and talked about went beyond football.’

Pochettino and Kane worked together at Tottenham for five-and-a-half years and while Spurs failed to win a trophy during that time – they did reach the Champions League final in 2019.

The Argentine manager did come close to reaching that stage of the competition once again this season, but lost to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the semi-final rounds.

Kane has been strongly linked with a move to Guardiola’s City this summer having informed Spurs chairman Levy of his desire to quit Tottenham this summer.

The England captain netted 33 goals this season and was the Premier League’s top goalscorer and assist maker in the process, but Spurs finished seventh in the table – meaning they will miss out on Champions League and Europa League football.

No matter what Kane achieves in the rest of his career, he is pretty certain that he does not want to move into coaching once he retires from playing, but refused to rule out that possibility entirely.

He added: ‘I am not doing the coaching badges and sitting here now, I would say no, but I would also say never say never. Maybe ask me again in five years.’
