Chelsea have renewed the contract of veteran defender Thiago Silva for another season.

The Brazilian centre-back, 36, played a key role in the heart of Chelsea’s defence as they won the Champions League, finished in the top four of the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final.

Silva’s renewal comes on the same day as Thomas Tuchel‘s new two-year extension to his Chelsea contract, with the German head coach now staying on until 2024.

The 93-cap Brazil international signed on a free transfer from Tuchel’s former side Paris Saint-Germain in August 2020.

Silva’s initial contract lasted one year with the option of an extension for another, which is the clause Chelsea have exercised.

He made 36 appearances in all competitions across the entire campaign, scoring twice, and despite some shaky moments has largely impressed with his composure, positional sense and leadership.
