Aldi has been crowned Australia’s ‘supermarket of the year’, beating out homegrown rivals like Coles and Woolworths.

The German-owned retailer scooped the top spot in Melbourne market research company Roy Morgan’s 2020 Customer Satisfaction Awards, which are based on an annual survey of 50,000 independent Australian consumers.

Shoppers were asked to rate supermarkets based on their overall satisfaction with service, deals and value for money throughout the year.

And it’s not just in-store that Aldi customers are enjoying their experience.

How Roy Morgan scores its Customer Satisfaction Awards

Melbourne market research company Roy Morgan asks customers to rate a product or service on a scale of: ‘very satisfied’, ‘fairly satisfied’, ‘neither satisfied nor dissatisfied’, ‘fairly dissatisfied’, ‘very dissatisfied’ or ‘completely satisfied’, ‘somewhat satisfied’, ‘neither satisfied nor dissatisfied’, ‘not very satisfied’ and ‘not at all satisfied’.

Analysts then combine the responses of ‘fairly satisfied’ and ‘very satisfied’ and calculate this as a percentage of the total customers surveyed. For every category, only customers of that product or service are included.

The discount store’s phone network Aldi Mobile also took the title for Mobile Phone Service Provider of the Year, upstaging global brand names such as Vodafone and Optus.

Aldi Australia group director Simon Padovani-Ginies said the supermarket is honoured to be so highly regarded among its customers.

‘We are continuously striving to deliver the highest quality products at the lowest prices possible, and it’s clear this commitment is resonating with customers year in and year out,’ Mr Padovani-Ginies said.

He said the Aldi Australia team is proud to live up to shoppers’ expectations by delivering exceptional value across all products.

Aldi has achieved a significant victory in what is the world’s biggest ongoing single source survey.

Covering 40 categories across multiple industries, Roy Morgan’s yearly award is presented to organisations with the highest number of top monthly ratings for customer satisfaction during the previous 12 months.

Aldi has previously won Roy Morgan’s Customer Satisfaction Awards for ‘Supermarket of the Year’ in 2016, 2014 and 2012, for ‘Mobile Phone Service Provider of the Year’ in 2019 and 2015, and for ‘Liquor Store of the Year’ in 2017.
