Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Holland international – who left Liverpool as a free agent this month – had attracted interest from several European giants including Bayern Munich and Barcelona

However, the 30-year-old chose the Ligue 1 side ahead of their competitors – agreeing terms until 2024.

Wijnaldum chose not to extend his contract with Liverpool at the end of the season – despite having spent five hugely successful years with the Reds.

As a result, the 30-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, however, the presence of Mauricio Pochettino at PSG proved to be too inviting.

Wijnaldum spoke highly of the PSG boss before he joined Liverpool and is now set to join him in France.

Wijnaldum, who made 237 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Newcastle in July 2016, says he will be looking to go ‘further and higher’ with his new club.

Speaking of his decision to join PSG, Wijnaldum said: ‘Signing for PSG is a new challenge for me.

‘I’m joining one of the best squads in Europe and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project.

‘PSG have proved how good they are in recent years and I’m convinced that together, with our supporters, we can go even further and higher.’

Having previously won the Champions League and Premier League during his five-year spell at Anfield, Wijnaldum will be beneficial addition to Pochettino’s side.

Nevertheless, Wijnaldum will look back on his time at Liverpool with fond memories – having been given a guard of honour in his final Liverpool game last month.

Following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace  – which guaranteed Jurgen Klopp’s side a spot in next season’s Champions League –  Wijnaldum said: ‘The only regret I probably will have is that I couldn’t leave with a title or a prize, that would be really, really good for me, for the fans and for everyone.

‘But everyone knows the circumstances we had during the season. It was really difficult – really difficult. But if you look how we changed it around, a few weeks ago I don’t think a lot of people would have thought that we could finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

‘That’s a good one. I’m happy we could bring Liverpool to the Champions League and that I basically put them in a good spot when I leave.’
