Manchester City captain Fernandinho has agreed a new one-year contract.
The Brazilian’s leadership played a pivotal role in reigniting City’s season as they went onto lift another Premier League title and the veteran is viewed as an invaluable member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
The midfielder, who turned 36 last month, had seen his games reduced but fought his way back into side as they progressed in the Champions League.
Fernandinho has agreed a new one-year contract extension with Manchester City
Fernandinho was a surprise omission for the final defeat by Chelsea in Porto, with Ilkay Gundogan chosen to sit in front of Guardiola’s back four instead.
Next year will be his ninth season at the Etihad Stadium and City have previously discussed potential career paths for him at the club following his eventual retirement.
Fernandinho, however, is first focusing on elongating his career and is close to putting pen to paper on another 12 months under Guardiola after striking an agreement.
An official announcement is expected before City return to pre-season training.
