Crown Princess Mary opens a new children’s hospice before attending Euro 2020 match with her family

Crown Princess Mary has had a busy week, opening up a new children’s hospice in Rønde on Wednesday, before attending the Denmark versus Belgium Euro 2020 football match with members of her family on Thursday.

The Danish Royal, 49, was a guest of the Group B Denmark versus Belgium match at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Thursday, where Denmark lost 2-1 to Belgium.

It was the team’s first match since Danish footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed with a cardiac arrest in their opening game of Euro 2020 last weekend.

Princess Mary watched the game from the stand with her patriotic husband, Prince Frederik, 53, son Prince Christian, 15, and cousins Prince Felix, 18, and Prince Nikolai, 21.

For the occasion, the 49-year-old royal opted for the colours of the Danish flag.

Princess Mary chose a white summer dress and her red Alexander McQueen blazer, which she accessorised with a tan belt and shoes and a bag by Chloe.

Prince Frederik, meanwhile, wore a neutral tweed blazer and white shirt, and he also brought along a Danish scarf to cheer on the team.

The game was halted in the 10th minute for a one-minute tribute of applause for Christian Eriksen.

The Danish player is recovering in hospital after he suffered cardiac arrest in the same stadium during Denmark’s opening loss to Finland in Copenhagen on Saturday.

Princess Mary and Prince Frederik were in the crowd when Eriksen collapsed four days ago.

On Wednesday, Princess Mary officially opened a youth hospice in Rønde called Strandbakkehuset, after a delay caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.

The building is a state of the art facility that has already won an award as Health Building of the Year.

Strandbakkehuset aims to ‘help to raise the quality of life for children, young people and their families in Western Denmark, who under difficult living conditions must have a daily life where life-threatening illness sets the agenda’.

It also aims to give young people ‘the best opportunities to get as much out of their lives as possible – developmentally and socially’.

Crown Princess Mary was given a tour of the hospice by Anders Kühnau, the Regional Council Chairman; Dorit Simson, the hospice director; and Jørgen Keinicke, the board chairman.
