Euro 2020: Harry Kane should follow Karim Benzema’s example, insists Jurgen Klinsmann

Harry Kane should follow Karim Benzema’s example on how to bounce back after a barren run, insists Jurgen Klinsmann, who is ‘a thousand per cent convinced’ that the England captain will break his duck against Germany

Jurgen Klinsmann has said Harry Kane should use Karim Benzema as an example on how to bounce back from a slow start to Euro 2020.

Euro ’96-winning captain Klinsmann insists he is ‘a thousand per cent convinced’ Kane can end his barren run against Germany on Tuesday despite failing to score in England’s three group games.

‘It’s normal for strikers to go through these periods,’ said Klinsmann. ‘Then you put one in and you explode. He looked good in the last game against the Czech Republic, he looked sharp, and did the right thing with one good chance, and it was a great goalkeeper reaction. If the ball had gone in Kane would have arrived in the tournament like Benzema.

‘Benzema struggled in the first couple of games, now he has broken through with two goals against Portugal. It is only a matter of time though obviously we are now in the knockout stage where you move on or go home.’

Klinsmann, who also played for Kane’s club Spurs in the 1990s, wants his country Germany to progress at Wembley on Tuesday night but won’t discount the prospect of Kane spoiling his wishes.

‘I am a thousand per cent convinced Harry is ready to rock it and go strong,’ he said.

‘And you need a little bit of luck as a striker as well, if you maybe get two or three chances, you are going to put one in.’

Kane was the leading scorer at the 2018 World Cup and has just claimed his third Premier League golden boot, joining an exclusive club with Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer.

But his form for England so far in the Euros has drawn criticism with Raheem Sterling the only player in Gareth Southgate’s team to so far find the net.
