Ross Barkley has returned to Chelsea training after a year away on loan at Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old was loaned out by then manager Frank Lampard and during his loan spell he scored three goals in 24 appearances.

Barkley was back in Cobham on Tuesday, as Thomas Tuchel’s side build up to a season where they hope to challenge Manchester City for the title.

In his absence, Tuchel replaced Lampard and won the club’s second Champions League trophy with a 1-0 final victory over Manchester City.

Therefore it was Barkley’s first training session under Tuchel as he hopes to impress the German on his return to the club.

The midfielder had a mixed spell at Aston Villa during his year-loan spell at the West Midlands club.

Barkley put in some great performances at the start of his time at Villa Park, most notably in their stunning 7-1 victory over Liverpool.

He then missed some time with a hamstring injury over the Christmas and New Year period and struggled to find his previous form on his return.

Barkley often found himself frustrated, and showed his displeasure when he was brought off in their 1-0 win over Arsenal in February.

He booted a drinks bottle near the touchline and had to be spoken to by assistant manager John Terry who offered the player some support.

Barkley will be hoping to add to his 86 appearances at Chelsea, though with a lot of competition in the squad, he might find it hard to break into the team.

He has been linked with another move away from the club during the summer transfer window and could face interest from other Premier League sides.
