Pat McCormack moves into quarter-finals with unanimous points victory against Belarus’ Aliaksandr Radzionau… with Team GB medal hopeful set to face Rohan Polanco or Bobo Usman Baturo in welterweight competition in Tokyo

Pat McCormack qualified for the quarter-finals of the welterweight boxing after beating Belarus’ Aliaksandr ‘Sasha’ Radzionau with a unanimous points win. 

The 26-year-old Team GB star won on all five scorecards (30-27 on four, 29-28 on one) in the first round of the boxing competition at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo.

The Sunderland-born medal hopeful will now face Uzbekistan’s Bobo Usman Baturo in the last eight on Friday following his majority decision win over Rohan Polanco from the Dominican Republic.

McCormack has also joined twin brother Luke McCormack in the quarter-finals, with the latter advancing in the lightweight competition with a win on Monday against India’s Manish Kaushik.

Luke McCormack will now clash with Cuba’s Andy Cruz for a chance to reach the semi-finals. 

The McCormack brothers have also been joined in winning their opening round matches by Charley Davison and Ben Whittaker in a strong start to the boxing in Tokyo from Team GB .

Olympic debutant Davison sealed a unanimous points decision victory against Morocco’s Rabab Cheddarin in the women’s flyweight. 

Whittaker meanwhile had to rely on a split decision in the men’s light-heavyweight to get past Colombia’s Jorge Luis Vivas.
