Team GB heavyweight Mahama Cho suffers AGONISING golden points defeat by Sun Hongyi in round of 16

Mahama Cho suffers AGONISING golden points defeat by Sun Hongyi in round of 16… but Team GB heavyweight could yet win Tokyo Olympics medal if Chinese advance to the final of the +87kg competition

Mahama Cho saw his hopes of winning Olympic gold ended by Sun Hongyi in the taekwondo round of 16.

The Ivory Coast-born heavyweight was defeated on Golden Points in a crushing 7-4 defeat in the men’s +80kg division at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Tokyo.

However, all hopes of the 31-year-old claiming a medal of some sort are not lost if Hongyi reach the final of the +87kg competition, a result that would see Cho entered into the repechage rounds.

Cho started the right well and took an early 4-2 lead in the first round of the match.

However, Hongyi came back into it in round two and restored parity before a scoreless third round.

But Cho’s heartbreak came when he was knocked out when Hongyi took first blood in Golden Point overtime.

Cho’s defeat continues the mixed fortunes Team GB’s taekwondo stars have endured in this summer’s Olympic Games.

Jade Jones failed to become the first British woman to win gold at three consecutive Olympics after she was knocked out by Refugee Olympic Team representative Kimia Alizadeh.

Bradly Sinden and Lauren Williams however have fared better, picking up silver in the men’s featherweight division and the women’s -67kg class respectively.

Bianca Walkden is the final GB taekwondo star to get her Olympics underway, when she takes on Cansel Deniz of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals of the women’s heavyweight.
